Mildred Darras passed away on April 19, 2017 at the age of 87.  She was born on August 14, 1929 in the small Pennsylvania coal mining town of Marion Heights. The daughter of the late Anna and John Preshlock, she was the last surviving of 10 children: Catherine, Sophie, Peter, Mary, William, Helen, Joseph, Dorothy, and Rose.   After graduating from High School she left small town life behind and moved to Manhattan. She lived with her sisters Kate and Dorothy (Dee), and started working for Van Heusen. She enjoyed all that city life had to offer, The Museum of Natural History was one of her favorite haunts. She met James Darras at Roseland Dance Hall and they married in 1950.  They started their married life together in Woodside, Queens where they raised their 3 daughters. Mildred worked for a time at A&P where she actually met and worked with someone from her small hometown. In 1970 James and Mildred moved to Co-Op City in the Bronx. Mildred spent the bulk of her career at New York Life – taking the express bus every day from the Bronx into Manhattan. She always maintained that New York Life was a great place to work and she enjoyed all the friends she made there.

Her husband passed away in 2014 and shortly after his death she moved to Brightview Assisted Living in Tarrytown.  Although the initial transition was difficult, she came to enjoy her life at Brightview. One of the big thrills of her life was meeting her great-grandson Kolya.  She is survived by her three daughters, Anita Green, Christine Rodriguez and Marion Derham; her grandsons Jeffrey, Gregory and Eric; and Great-grandson Kolya. She was a sweet, loving person who delighted in being in touch with her large extended family.  She will be dearly missed. The family will hold a memorial gathering on Sunday, April 30, 2017 from 10:30 am – 12:30 pm at Dwyer & Vanderbilt Funeral Home, 90 North Broadway, Tarrytown New York.
